Bachiru is ivory dyed with red, dark blue, green, and other dyes, and its surface is carved with a repellent carving technique,
This is a technique for expressing designs and patterns by revealing a white ivory base.
It flourished in China during the Tang Dynasty and was introduced to Japan in the Nara Period (710-794), and is included in the Shosoin Treasures.
The collection contains a number of works that are decorated with this technique.
