Private live performance by a teacher who is no stranger to the world of Tokiwazu

Tokiwazu-bushi is a form of shamisen music that was established in Edo in 1747 (Enkyo 4). It has developed together with Kabuki, taking over the trappings of Bungo-bushi, which was suppressed by the Edo Shogunate. In today’s Kabuki performances, there are many performances of Tokiwazubushi along with Nagauta, Gidayu-bushi, and Kiyomoto-bushi.

Mr. Tokiwazu is not only a performer, but also an academic in the field of Japanese traditional music, giving historical and musical talks, and has been a pioneer in YouTube and other media. He has composed many genres of music, including shamisen music forms, contemporary works, and TV commercials, and has also focused on collaborations between Western and Japanese instruments, and his performances in Japan and abroad under the name “The Trio” with flutist Yumi Yamagata and pianist Jun Kanno have received great acclaim.

As a member of the Tokiwazu-bushi Preservation Society, he is designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset (General Certification) holder for classical performances.

This is a live performance with a mini lecture that even beginners can enjoy.

What is Tokiwazu? Shamisen music? If you’ve never even seen Kabuki, don’t worry. By listening to Mr. Tokiwazu Mojibei’s powerful shamisen and humorous, easy-to-understand lectures, you will open a new door to a new genre of music.

Will this be recorded? I am a former student of Mojibei’s, apparently the first foreign student in Tokiwazu. It’s been many years since I last saw him, in New York. I miss him and his family very much. It would be a blessing to hear his presentation as I can’t be in the Ginza then!
    Thank you.
